Russian companies in talks to build small hydroelectric power plants in Afghanistan

MOSCOW, February 2. /The Times of Russia/ — Representatives of several Russian companies are currently holding talks in Kabul with relevant Afghan agencies regarding the development of small hydroelectric power projects, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Gul Hassan, has confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with The Times of Russia, the ambassador said Russian firms are showing growing interest in Afghanistan’s electricity generation sector. According to him, some Russian delegations have already visited the country and met with government agencies and technical specialists to explore possible cooperation.

“Yes, Russian companies are demonstrating interest in power generation. Some of them have already travelled to Afghanistan and held discussions with the concerned authorities and experts,” Gul Hassan said when asked about progress in this area.

The ambassador added that tangible developments are expected soon. “Practical steps will be taken in this direction in the near future,” he noted, highlighting optimism around the ongoing engagements.

This marks Gul Hassan’s first interview since assuming his role as head of Afghanistan’s diplomatic mission in Moscow. The talks underline a broader effort to strengthen economic ties, with renewable energy projects emerging as a key area of cooperation in Russia news related to Central and South Asia.
