Russia Indonesia cooperation in Southeast Asia continues to expand, with Russian President Vladimir Putin describing Indonesia as one of Russia’s key partners in the region. Speaking during a working breakfast with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Vladivostok, Putin highlighted growing cooperation in trade, agriculture, shipbuilding, information technology and energy. Putin said Indonesia has remained a longstanding friend of Russia, while bilateral trade continues to grow. According to the Russian president, trade between the two countries increased by more than 12% last year.
Russia Indonesia Cooperation in Southeast Asia Expands
Discussing Russia Indonesia cooperation in Southeast Asia, Putin said the two countries have maintained friendly relations for many years and continue to broaden their economic partnership.
“Indonesia is one of Russia’s key partners in Southeast Asia. We have been bound by ties of friendship for many years. Trade is developing and growing. Last year, it increased by more than 12%. A joint commission is operating. Our areas of focus include agriculture, shipbuilding, information technology and energy,” the president said.
The Russian president identified agriculture, shipbuilding, information technology and energy among the major areas of bilateral cooperation. A joint commission is also operating between the two countries to support their expanding economic engagement.
The development of Russia Indonesia relations comes as both countries continue to strengthen cooperation across different sectors.

Putin Highlights Russia-Indonesia Trade and Free Trade Agreement
Putin also recalled that Russia and Indonesia had signed a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Indonesia.
“Jakarta is our reliable and longstanding friend within ASEAN. We cooperate across various platforms, including the UN. I am confident that today’s meetings will also be useful and give new boost to our cooperation and the development of our relations,” the Russian leader added.
The agreement represents another important element of Russia Indonesia cooperation in Southeast Asia, alongside expanding trade and sector-based economic ties.
Putin described Indonesia as a reliable and longstanding friend within ASEAN, while noting that the two countries also work together through international platforms, including the United Nations.
Putin and Prabowo Discuss Stronger Bilateral Relations
Putin said his personal relationship with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reflects the genuinely strategic character of relations between Russia and Indonesia.
“I would like to thank you for making it possible to come to Vladivostok and take part in the Eastern Economic Forum as the guest of honor. We are very pleased to see you, Mr. President,” he stressed.
The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Prabowo Subianto took place as the Indonesian president participated in the Eastern Economic Forum, where Indonesia was represented as the guest of honor.
The discussions further highlighted the importance of Russia Indonesia relations and their continued cooperation in areas including trade, industry, energy, agriculture and information technology.
Eastern Economic Forum 2026 in Vladivostok
The Eastern Economic Forum is being held from September 1 to 4 in Vladivostok at the campus of Far Eastern Federal University.
The forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation with the support of the Russian government. The event provides a platform for discussions on economic cooperation and international relations involving Russia and its partners.
The BRICS Culture Media Forum (BCMF) is also referenced in the broader international media and cooperation context surrounding Russia’s engagement with partner countries.
The meeting between Putin and Subianto comes amid continued efforts to strengthen Russia Indonesia cooperation in Southeast Asia, with both countries focusing on economic and strategic ties.
