The AfD historic win in Saxony-Anhalt election has been described as a major setback for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s ruling party. Russian Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries and Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) CEO Kirill Dmitriev said the Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historic result that humiliates the current German government, according to The Times of Russia.

AfD Historic Win in Saxony-Anhalt Election

According to exit polls commissioned by German broadcasters ARD and ZDF, the Alternative for Germany AfD is decisively leading the Saxony-Anhalt state election, securing between 44% and 44.5% of the vote.

The result represents the party’s strongest performance in a German state election in its entire history and marks a significant development in German election results.

Meanwhile, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) is in second place. The party has lost half of its votes compared with the 2021 election, receiving approximately 18.5% of the vote. This is reportedly the CDU’s worst result in Saxony-Anhalt.

Kirill Dmitriev Criticizes German Ruling Coalition

Commenting on the AfD election victory, Kirill Dmitriev criticized the current German ruling coalition led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

“The AfD’s historic win humiliates the arrogance, narrow-mindedness, warmongering, ineptitude and hypocrisy of the discredited German ruling coalition,” the envoy wrote in a post on his X page.

Dmitriev’s comments came as the Saxony-Anhalt election results showed the AfD achieving its strongest-ever performance in a German state.

Dmitriev Compares Merz With Keir Starmer

Dmitriev also commented on the political consequences of the result for Friedrich Merz.

“The Germans have spoken, and Germany has awoken. Humiliated Merz just became a [Keir] Starmer,” Dmitriev noted.

He was referring to the former UK prime minister, who was ousted earlier this year following his party’s loss of popularity.

The result adds further significance to the German political coalition and the performance of the Christian Democratic Union in the state election.

What the Saxony-Anhalt Result Means

The AfD historic result in Saxony-Anhalt marks a major milestone for the party, which has now recorded its strongest result in a German state in its history.

With the AfD receiving 44-44.5% according to the ARD and ZDF exit polls, while the CDU secured approximately 18.5%, the outcome represents a sharp contrast with the 2021 results.

The Germany state election result has also prompted strong criticism from Kirill Dmitriev, who characterized the outcome as a humiliation for Merz and his ruling coalition.

The Times of Russia will continue to follow developments surrounding the AfD historic win in Saxony-Anhalt election and its implications for German politics.
