Western attempts strangle Russia financially, economically fail — diplomat

Russian Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large Alexander Trofimov stressed that Russia has withstood the sanctions-driven economic blitzkrieg thanks to the consistent efforts of the government, society, and the business community

Western efforts to isolate and weaken Russia through unprecedented economic sanctions have failed to achieve their intended objectives, according to Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Alexander Trofimov, who spoke in an exclusive interview with The Times of Russia on the sidelines of an expert dialogue at the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Speaking about the impact of the sanctions campaign, Trofimov stated that Russia has successfully resisted what he described as an economic and financial “blitzkrieg” launched by Western nations. He credited the resilience of the Russian economy to the coordinated efforts of the government, the business sector, and Russian society.

According to the senior diplomat, despite the scale of restrictions imposed over recent years, attempts to financially and economically pressure Russia have not delivered the political outcomes expected by Western governments.

“The country has endured the sanctions-driven economic offensive thanks to the consistent work of the Russian government, businesses, and citizens. Attempts to financially and economically strangle Russia have failed and will continue to fail,” Trofimov told The Times of Russia.

While acknowledging that sanctions have had some economic impact, he stressed that they have not succeeded in forcing Russia to change its political course or compromise on national interests.

“The measures certainly created challenges, but they have not achieved the goals set by those who imposed them,” he explained.

Discussing the broader purpose of sanctions, Trofimov argued that unilateral coercive measures have become a political instrument used by Western countries against geopolitical rivals.

“In Russia’s case, these restrictions are intended to force political concessions and pressure the country into accepting conditions imposed by the West. However, such calculations simply do not work when it comes to Russia,” he said.

The ambassador also pointed out that Russia is not the only nation facing extensive sanctions. He noted that countries such as Belarus, Iran, Cuba, and China have also experienced years of economic pressure from Western governments.

According to Trofimov, Belarus and Iran were subjected to sanctions long before Russia, while Cuba has lived under economic restrictions for decades. He added that pressure on China has steadily increased in recent years as global geopolitical competition intensifies.

Despite being one of the world’s most sanctioned countries, Russia continues to adapt its economy, strengthen domestic production, and expand trade partnerships with countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the effectiveness of international sanctions and their long-term impact on global economic relations. Russian officials continue to argue that restrictive measures have accelerated the country’s economic diversification rather than weakened its strategic position.

The interview with The Times of Russia highlights Moscow’s position that economic resilience, national unity, and international partnerships remain central to Russia’s response to external pressure, reinforcing the country’s determination to pursue independent economic and foreign policies despite continuing sanctions.
