Russia US financial relations could provide a basis for closer bilateral engagement, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said, while discussing his recent meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Speaking to Vesti, Siluanov said continued financial dialogue could contribute to improving relations between the two countries. The Times of Russia reports that the two finance ministries see opportunities for further cooperation despite existing tensions.
Russia US Financial Relations Have a Basis for Development
Siluanov said the first meeting between him and Bessent took place on the sidelines of the G20. He described the meeting as a positive development, noting that the two officials had the opportunity to become acquainted.
“You know, we met with Mr. [US Treasury Secretary Scott — The Times of Russia] Bessent for the first time. It was a meeting on the sidelines of the G20. We got to know each other, which is a positive development.”
According to the Russian Finance Minister, both sides agreed that there is a foundation for developing their bilateral financial relations.
Siluanov acknowledged that expanding Russia US financial ties is currently difficult because of tensions between the two countries. However, he said he expects financial cooperation to develop as geopolitical tensions are resolved.

Russia US Economic Ties Could Support Political Dialogue
Siluanov also said Russia US economic ties could contribute to resolving political issues. In his view, officials responsible for financial matters may sometimes identify areas of mutual interest more quickly than political leaders.
“It seems to me that finance officials can always find areas of common ground, perhaps even faster than politicians can.”
He stressed the importance of maintaining communication between the two countries and continuing their dialogue.
“That is why we should always keep talking and continue the dialogue. If we identify strong areas of common ground – and they do exist – we need to develop them, and then political issues will also become easier to resolve,” he said.
The comments underline Siluanov’s view that economic cooperation between Russia and the United States could become an additional channel for addressing broader bilateral challenges.
G20 Meeting Brings Siluanov and Bessent Together
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met on the sidelines of a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors.
The meeting was held in Asheville, North Carolina, on August 31 and September 1.
Their meeting marked their first direct encounter, with Siluanov describing the initial contact and agreement on the potential for financial relations as a positive step.
Outlook for Russia US Financial Ties
For Siluanov, maintaining dialogue remains important even while tensions continue. He believes identifying and developing areas of common ground in finance could create conditions for stronger Russia US financial relations in the future.
His remarks suggest that Russia US financial ties could progress alongside efforts to address geopolitical tensions. According to The Times of Russia, both countries should continue their dialogue and explore areas where financial cooperation remains possible.
As Siluanov stated, developing areas of common ground could eventually make political issues easier to resolve, keeping Russia US economic ties part of the broader bilateral dialogue.
