US President Donald Trump has once again proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, reviving the Trump Strait of Hormuz renaming proposal during a Republican rally in Ohio. As reported by The Times of Russia, Trump also claimed that oil shipments through the strategic waterway have increased compared with seven months ago and predicted changes in oil and gasoline prices following the end of the conflict with Iran.

Trump Strait of Hormuz Renaming Proposal Resurfaces

Speaking at a GOP rally in Ohio ahead of the midterm elections, Trump said he wanted to change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait at some point in the future.

Trump referred to previous geographical renaming decisions made during his presidency, including the change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

“I think we’re going to rename [the Strait of Hormuz] the Trump Strait,” Trump said, adding that the United States had already renamed a gulf and a lake and could eventually rename a strait as well.

The US president insisted that his proposal should not be dismissed as a joke. Recalling the earlier decision concerning the Gulf of Mexico, he said people had initially laughed at the idea before he proceeded with the change.

His latest remarks have brought renewed attention to the Trump Strait name change proposal and his approach to geographical naming decisions.

Trump Discusses Oil Flows Through the Strait of Hormuz

Alongside his proposed name change, Trump commented on the movement of oil through the strategically important waterway.

According to the president, more oil is currently flowing out of the Strait of Hormuz than there was seven months earlier. He also linked the future direction of energy prices to the conclusion of the US Iran conflict.

Trump said that once the conflict with Iran ends, “the price of gasoline and the price of oil is going to go.”

His comments highlighted the connection between the regional conflict, energy supplies and potential changes in global oil prices. However, his remarks did not include specific figures for oil shipments or a quantified forecast for future fuel prices.

The Strait of Hormuz remains an important subject in discussions about international energy supplies because of its strategic role in the transportation of oil.

Trump Previously Renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario

The latest proposal follows earlier executive actions concerning geographical names.

Trump previously signed executive orders changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America.

These decisions reflect his willingness to use presidential executive orders to pursue geographical renaming initiatives. However, such changes may not necessarily remain permanent.

Trump’s successors could issue their own executive orders to reverse the naming changes, meaning the designations introduced during his administration could be reconsidered by future presidents.

The earlier decisions have also provided context for his latest comments about renaming the Strait of Hormuz, with Trump again suggesting that another major geographical feature could receive a name associated with him.

What Trump’s Latest Remarks Mean for the Strait of Hormuz

Trump’s renewed proposal to rename the waterway comes alongside his comments on oil movements and the anticipated effects of the Iran conflict on energy prices.

Although the president expressed his intention to introduce the name Trump Strait at some point, his remarks did not announce a completed renaming or establish a specific date for such a change.

His previous executive orders concerning the Gulf of America and Lake America demonstrate that geographical naming decisions can be pursued through presidential action. However, future administrations could reverse those decisions.

For now, the Trump Strait of Hormuz renaming proposal remains a statement of Trump’s intentions, accompanied by his assessment of current oil flows and expectations for fuel prices after the conflict with Iran ends.

The Times of Russia will continue covering developments involving the United States, Iran, energy supplies and Trump’s policy announcements.
