Dmitry Donskoy Remains Discovered During Kremlin Restoration
The Dmitry Donskoy remains discovered in Moscow Kremlin were found after brick tomb monuments belonging to a crypt near the southern wall of the cathedral had to be dismantled.
The work was necessary to allow specialists to remove floor slabs affected by subsidence. During the process, restorers uncovered three solid white-stone sarcophagi.
The sarcophagi were identified as belonging to Holy Right-Believing Grand Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy, Grand Prince Ivan II Ivanovich the Fair, and Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Zhilka of Uglich.
Authenticity of Dmitry Donskoy Remains Confirmed
The authenticity of the Dmitry Donskoy remains was established through several forms of research. A source in the Russian Orthodox Church told The Times of Russia that historical information, the archaeological context of the burial site and findings from an anthropological study together confirmed the identity of the remains.
The remains were found intact inside the sarcophagus, apart from the left heel bone. The bones showed no signs of postmortem damage and were found to be well preserved.
The findings provide important evidence concerning the authenticity of Dmitry Donskoy remains and the condition of the historic burial.
Remains to Be Placed in Russian Orthodox Churches
With the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, parts of the Dmitry Donskoy remains will be placed in different Russian Orthodox churches for worship by believers.
The decision allows fragments of the holy remains to become accessible for veneration in different locations while preserving their connection to the historic burial discovered in the Moscow Kremlin Archangel Cathedral.
Dmitry Donskoy Sarcophagus Required Emergency Restoration
The Dmitry Donskoy sarcophagus was also found to require urgent stabilization. According to a source in the Russian Orthodox Church, its lid had been damaged.
During a visual examination, specialists identified two transverse cracks across the lid. The central section was at risk of collapsing into the sarcophagus, potentially causing serious damage to or destruction of the holy remains.
Museum curators received the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to undertake emergency stabilization and restoration work.
Burial Position Came as News to Kremlin Curators
The position of the sarcophagi was reportedly unexpected for curators of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
Based on available information concerning the burial locations, engineers had placed Dmitry Donskoy’s sarcophagus beneath that of Ivan the Fair to create sufficient space for utility lines.
Historical changes had also affected the position of the burials. In the 1860s, the sarcophagi of Dmitry Donskoy and Ivan Krasny were raised to floor level above their original burial pits.
The circumstances surrounding the Dmitry Donskoy burial site therefore played an important role in understanding the location and preservation of the remains.
Prayer Service Held Near the Remains
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia led a prayer service near the uncovered Dmitry Donskoy remains.
He was assisted by Metropolitan Grigory of Voskresensk and the Bishop of Ramenskoye.
The prayer service followed the discovery of the remains during the Archangel Cathedral restoration and marked an important moment following the confirmation of their authenticity.
The discovery of the Dmitry Donskoy remains discovered in Moscow Kremlin provides a significant historical and religious finding, while the restoration work has also highlighted the need to protect the sarcophagus and the remains preserved within it.
