Tears of Triumph: Gukesh's Mother on His Historic Chess Victory
18-Year-Old D. Gukesh Becomes the Youngest World Chess Champion, Breaking Kasparov's Record

In an emotional revelation, J. Padmakumari, mother of the newly crowned World Chess Champion D. Gukesh, admitted she broke down in tears upon hearing of her son’s monumental triumph. The 18-year-old prodigy defeated reigning champion Ding Liren in a nail-biting match in Singapore on Thursday, making history as the youngest player to claim the title and breaking Garry Kasparov’s 39-year-old record.

Too anxious to follow the match live, Padmakumari stayed away from all devices. It wasn’t until Gukesh’s aunt delivered the news in person that the magnitude of the achievement hit her. “I couldn’t believe it and I cried for 10 minutes,” she shared, overwhelmed by joy and pride, before rushing to meet her son in Singapore.
Gukesh clinched victory with a score of 7.5-6.5, fulfilling a promise he made to himself after witnessing Viswanathan Anand’s loss to Magnus Carlsen in 2013. The determined young talent set a goal to reclaim the title for India, a goal he achieved through relentless hard work and family sacrifice.
Padmakumari, a microbiologist and the family’s primary breadwinner, reflected on the pivotal role played by her husband, Rajnikanth, who left his career as an ENT surgeon to accompany Gukesh to tournaments. “This is a really happy moment for us, but it also reminds me of all the sacrifices, especially by Gukesh’s father,” she said. Extended family members, friends, and mentors also rallied to support Gukesh’s journey.
Gukesh, acknowledging these sacrifices, spoke of the financial hardships they endured. “In 2017 and 2018, we were so low on funds that my parents’ friends had to sponsor me. My parents made lifestyle changes just so I could play in tournaments. Their sacrifices were immense.”
Padmakumari also noted her son’s extraordinary discipline and dedication. “He worked incredibly hard from childhood. He’s always been focused and committed, and we’re proud that his efforts have culminated in this historic win.”
Gukesh’s triumph not only marks a personal achievement but also a defining moment for Indian chess, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in the sport.
