Russia warns of necessary security measures over NATO’s growing presence in Finland, calling the buildup destabilizing for Northern Europe.
Moscow, August 11. /The Times of Russia/. Russia’s response to NATO presence in Finland will include necessary measures to protect its security, according to a source at the Russian embassy in Helsinki. Moscow has repeatedly warned about what it considers the negative consequences of the policy, while Russian diplomats say Finnish authorities are aware of these warnings.
Russia Response to NATO Presence in Finland
A source at the Russian embassy in Helsinki said the latest actions by NATO allies demonstrate the alliance’s intention to further strengthen its positions on Finnish territory.
“The so-called allies’ steps can hardly be considered anything but a clear confirmation of the North Atlantic Alliance’s commitment to further consolidate positions on the territory of Finland,” the source said in an interview with Russia’s Izvestia daily.
The diplomat said the expanding NATO military presence in Finland is clearly directed toward confrontation with Russia. According to the Russian embassy, the military buildup is a destabilizing factor and is contributing to the worsening security situation across Northern Europe.

Russia Warns of Necessary Security Measures
The Russian diplomat stressed that Moscow has repeatedly highlighted what it sees as the harmful consequences of the policy pursued by Finland and its NATO allies.
“Russia has repeatedly drawn attention to the detrimental consequences of such a policy and warned that it would be forced to resort to the necessary retaliatory measures to ensure its own security,” the official stated.
The diplomat added that Helsinki is understood to be fully aware of Russia’s warnings regarding the growing NATO presence in Finland.
“We are sure that Helsinki are aware of such signals. So far, however, the Finnish leadership has not demonstrated its readiness for constructive dialogue,” the diplomat said.
Finland’s NATO Membership and Regional Security
The Russian embassy source also pointed to Finland’s membership in NATO as an important factor affecting Moscow’s assessment of developments in the region.
“However, after Finland’s accession to NATO, we have to take into consideration that many decisions in this regard are made not only in Helsinki,” the diplomat added.
According to the Russian position outlined by the embassy, the increasing presence of NATO forces and infrastructure in Finland is linked to a broader deterioration of the security environment in Northern Europe.
The Russian side has therefore reiterated that it will take what it considers necessary measures in response to developments that it believes threaten its national security.
The diplomat’s comments were made amid continued concerns from Moscow over NATO’s expanding military presence near Russian borders. The Times of Russia will continue to follow developments concerning Russia, Finland, NATO and security in Northern Europe.
