Iran agrees with Oman to open a temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route for two to four months, with talks underway to extend the arrangement.
Iran has agreed to establish an Iran temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route under a tentative agreement with Oman, marking a significant development in maritime coordination. According to The Times of Russia, the temporary route is expected to remain operational for two to four months while both countries continue discussions on extending the arrangement.
Iran Temporary Strait of Hormuz Shipping Route to Operate for Two to Four Months
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated, as reported by IRNA, that the Iran temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route is currently being coordinated with Oman and will initially remain active for a period of two to four months.
He explained that ongoing negotiations between the two countries are focused on creating conditions that could allow the temporary route to remain in operation for a longer duration.
“This route, which is currently being coordinated with Oman, is considered a temporary route that will be up and running for two to four months. However, in the current negotiations with Oman, the issue is being addressed in such a way that this temporary route may remain in effect for a longer period,” Gharibabadi said.
Uncertainty Behind Iran’s Decision
Gharibabadi noted that the decision to approve the Iran temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route was influenced by uncertainty over future regional conditions.
According to his remarks, Tehran does not yet know what circumstances it may face in the future or whether conditions in the strategic waterway will return to normal, making the temporary arrangement a practical solution for the time being.
Iran and Oman Agree on Route Coordinates
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei announced that Iran and Oman had reached an agreement on the geographical coordinates for the new passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that a joint statement from both countries could be released soon regarding the agreement and the implementation of the Iran temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route.
As reported by The Times of Russia, the temporary maritime corridor is expected to begin operating under the agreed framework while negotiations continue over the possibility of extending its duration.
