U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday (April 7, 2026) that “a whole civilisation will die” if Iran does not accept his deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz before his 8 p.m. deadline (Eastern Time). Tehran, in turn, warned that its response would deprive the U.S. and its allies of oil and gas for years.
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Mr. Trump, who had extended his deadline several times in recent past claiming progress in talks with Iran, wrote in a social media post. “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen… We will find out tonight,” he added.
Vice-President J.D. Vance, who is in Hungary, said the U.S. has “tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use” against Iran, without elaborating further. The White House later said Mr. Vance did not mean use of the nuclear weapons. Responding to a post on X that said Mr. Vance implies the President would use nuclear weapons, the White House Rapid Response said: “Literally nothing @VP said here “implies” this, you absolute buffoons”.
The U.S. has sent a ceasefire proposal to Iran through Pakistan. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said the U.S. proposal was not acceptable. President Trump has said Iran had responded to his proposal but it was “not good enough”. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) says the Strait of Hormuz would never return to its previous status.
If the U.S. “crosses red lines, Iran’s response will extend beyond the region”, the IRGC said in a statement on Tuesday (April 7, 2026). “Iran will attack the infrastructure of the U.S. and its partners that “will leave the U.S. and its allies deprived of oil and gas in the region for years.”
The statements from both sides came as Tehran reported the U.S. and Israel had already begun attacking key infrastructure. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had targeted bridges and railways that “were used by the Revolutionary Guards”. Iran’s Mizan news agency reported that a bridge in Qom, a rail bridge in central Iran and rail tracks outside Tehran were struck.
Iran’s Mehr news agency reported that U.S. and Israel carried out strikes in Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf, which is a key export terminal for Iran’s oil and gas. “The American-Zionist enemy has carried out several attacks on Kharg island, and several explosions have been heard there,” Mehr stated.

The IRGC said the war is entering a new phase, and Iran would dramatically escalate its response with the deployment of dual missile launchers. “And now, a new stage of the war; With newly refreshed launchers of dual units of Fateh and Khaybar-shekan (Khaybar-buster) missiles; All previous strikes × two,” IRGC Aerospace Force commander Brig. Gen. Majid Mousavi said in a video.
The Guards also said they launched the 99th wave of attack on Tuesday (April 7, 2026) targeting U.S. bases and interests in the Gulf and command centres in Israel. The largest petrochemical complex owned by US companies Sadara, ExxonMobil, and Dow Chemical, located in the Al Jubail region of Saudi Arabia, and the large petrochemical complex of the American company Chevron Phillips situated in Saudi Arabia’s Al Juaima’h were effectively targeted,” it said.
