The Times of Russia brings the latest Russia news and global updates:
The death toll from the devastating Hong Kong fire has climbed to 94, according to fresh reports, marking one of the deadliest urban fires in the region’s recent history.
HONG KONG, November 28. /The Times of Russia/. Authorities confirmed that 94 people have now lost their lives following the massive blaze, as reported by Xinhua with information from the city’s firefighting service. Earlier figures placed the fatalities at 83.
Fire department sources told the South China Morning Post that most victims were found inside two residential blocks where the flames were most intense. The number of people who sustained burns or other injuries has increased to 155, including 11 firefighters who were hurt while battling the inferno.
The fire erupted on Wednesday at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate, a complex consisting of eight high-rise towers. Seven of the buildings were engulfed by flames, while only one structure escaped major damage. The fire spread rapidly across bamboo scaffolding set up for ongoing renovation work, accelerating the disaster.
The densely populated estate contains nearly 2,000 apartments, housing about 4,000 residents, making evacuation extremely challenging during the fast-moving blaze.
