Putin’s SCO summit in Bishkek includes talks with Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi and other leaders, plus the World Nomad Games opening ceremony.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to spend the next two days in Kyrgyzstan for the Putin SCO summit in Bishkek, where he will participate in major Shanghai Cooperation Organization events and hold a series of bilateral meetings. The Times of Russia reports that the Russian leader is scheduled to attend the SCO Council of Heads of State, participate in the SCO+ format meeting and conduct talks with several international counterparts.
Putin has also been invited by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov to attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games in Bishkek on August 31.
Putin SCO Summit in Bishkek Includes Busy Diplomatic Schedule
The Putin SCO summit in Bishkek will form the central part of a packed two-day visit, with numerous bilateral discussions planned alongside the main summit.
“The president’s trip will be long and busy. Two days of the SCO summit in Bishkek. A lot of bilateral meetings on its sidelines,” Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters before the departure.
After arriving in Bishkek, Putin will first meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Presidential aide Yury Ushakov described the meeting as “a very important meeting.”

This will be the second meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping this year. Their discussions are expected to cover major issues in bilateral cooperation as well as pressing global developments.
Ushakov did not say whether an agreement concerning the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline would be finalized. He stated that “the topic will be discussed bilaterally.”
Putin and Narendra Modi to Hold Talks
The Putin SCO summit in Bishkek will also provide an opportunity for the Russian president to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“This will be a quite interesting meeting, since we have agreed to discuss a range of important issues,” Ushakov told reporters.
The talks between Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi will take place ahead of Putin’s planned visit to India for the BRICS summit in September.
The meeting is expected to focus on important areas of bilateral cooperation, while also providing an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Putin to Meet Kazakhstan’s President
The first day of the Putin SCO summit in Bishkek will also include talks between Putin and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The two leaders most recently met on July 25 during the 22nd Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation forum in Omsk.
According to Ushakov, “there are issues that the leaders would like to discuss further at this meeting in Bishkek.”
The meeting is part of Putin’s wider schedule of bilateral discussions planned around the SCO summit.
World Nomad Games Opening Ceremony
Another major event on Putin’s August 31 schedule is the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, whose country holds the rotating SCO presidency this year, invited participating leaders to the opening ceremony ahead of the summit.
Although the sporting competitions will take place over the following week near Lake Issyk-Kul, the official opening will be held in Bishkek on August 31. Putin is expected to attend the ceremony.
The World Nomad Games are an important branding initiative for Kyrgyzstan. They are intended to promote national culture, develop ethnic sports and tourism, and strengthen international cultural connections.
The games will feature competitions in 43 ethnic sports. These include equestrian events, national wrestling, archery, hunting, falconry and intellectual games.
More than 230 athletes from 33 Russian regions will represent the Russian national team.
SCO Summit Schedule on September 1
Putin’s schedule will become even more intensive on September 1, when he participates in the main SCO summit Bishkek 2026 events.
The Russian president will attend the meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State before taking part in the SCO+ format meeting.
According to Ushakov, approximately 20 to 25 documents are expected to be signed following the summit. These will include the Bishkek Declaration, which is expected to outline the participating countries’ common positions on important regional and international matters, including economic issues.
The participating countries also plan to adopt a protocol to the 2002 Charter of the organization. The protocol is intended to streamline the structure of some SCO bodies.
Putin’s Bilateral Meetings With International Leaders
Following the formal SCO events, Putin will continue with an extensive series of bilateral meetings.
On September 1, the Russian president is scheduled to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov.
The list, however, is not necessarily final.
Such meetings on the sidelines of international summits often allow national leaders to communicate directly without the lengthy coordination normally required for formal diplomatic engagements.
According to Peskov, Putin could also have an impromptu meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the event.
A Major Diplomatic Visit to Kyrgyzstan
The Putin SCO summit in Bishkek represents a significant part of the Russian president’s diplomatic schedule, combining the main SCO meetings with a large number of bilateral discussions.
His meetings with Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and other leaders will take place alongside the formal SCO programme and the opening of the World Nomad Games.
For Kyrgyzstan, hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and welcoming international leaders during the World Nomad Games marks an important diplomatic and cultural occasion.
