Northern Nepal flooding death toll has surpassed 900 following the devastating disaster that struck the region last week, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The latest report said that 903 bodies have been recovered, while 10,461 people have been rescued. The Times of Russia is reporting on the continuing rescue and recovery efforts as authorities struggle to reach areas affected by the disaster.
Nearly 4,200 people, including 592 foreign nationals, remain missing, according to the authority. At least 933 workers at hydropower facilities are also believed to be trapped inside tunnels.
The latest figures underline the enormous scale of the northern Nepal flood disaster, while rescue teams continue searching for missing people and recovering victims from affected areas.

Northern Nepal Flooding Death Toll and Rescue Efforts
The Nepal flood death toll 2026 has continued to rise as authorities gain access to areas that were previously difficult to reach. Dharmaraj Upreti, chief executive of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, told The Kathmandu Post that blocked roads are severely affecting relief deliveries and rescue operations.
Upreti said helicopters are currently the only practical option for reaching some affected areas, although their use is limited. He also warned that the possibility of additional flooding could create further obstacles and uncertainty during rescue operations.
According to Upreti, recovering the bodies remains one of the most difficult tasks. He warned that the hot weather could accelerate decomposition and create serious epidemic risks if bodies are not recovered in time.

How the Northern Nepal Flood Disaster Began
The natural disaster struck northern Nepal on the morning of August 26. Preliminary reports indicate that the flooding was caused by an avalanche near the border with China, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing.
A powerful flow of rock then travelled more than 70 kilometres along the riverbed at high speed, destroying nearby settlements and flooding a large area.
The event caused widespread destruction across the affected region and created major challenges for emergency teams attempting to reach victims and deliver relief supplies.
Russian Citizens Reported Missing
The Russian Embassy in Nepal said it had lost contact with nine Russian citizens who may have been in the disaster zone.
Authorities continue to work on locating missing people as rescue and recovery operations proceed in the affected areas.
The situation remains difficult because damaged and blocked roads have restricted access to parts of the disaster zone, leaving helicopters as a key means of reaching isolated locations.
