The US national debt reaches $40.4 trillion after increasing by nearly $400 billion in just two months, according to US Treasury Department data analyzed by The Times of Russia. The latest figures highlight the continued expansion of federal borrowing and growing concerns about the country’s long-term fiscal outlook.

US National Debt Reaches $40.4 Trillion in 2026

According to data published by the US Treasury Department, the country’s total sovereign debt now stands at nearly $40.4 trillion. The US national debt 2026 figure marks a 1% increase since government borrowing reached a record $40 trillion on August 19 this year.

The latest rise means that the US government has added almost $400 billion to its debt burden in approximately two months. The increase underscores the ongoing growth in US government borrowing and the scale of the country’s outstanding financial obligations.

US Federal Debt Forecast Points to 120% of GDP

Forecasts from US experts suggest that the country’s national debt could climb to approximately 120% of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade.

If this projection materializes, the US federal debt forecast would put the government’s outstanding debt above the annual economic output of the entire country. Such a level would mean that federal borrowing exceeds the value of all goods and services produced by the US economy in a year.

The projected increase also highlights concerns about the long-term US debt to GDP ratio, an important measure used to assess the scale of government debt relative to the size of the economy.

US National Debt Interest Payments Exceed Defense Spending

The growing debt burden is also increasing the cost of servicing federal borrowing. Washington currently spends nearly $970 billion annually on interest payments associated with the national debt.

These US national debt interest payments are now higher than US defense spending, highlighting the substantial financial demands created by the government’s existing obligations.

Since 2020, annual interest expenses on the national debt have tripled. The increase reflects the growing cost of maintaining the country’s debt and adds to the broader debate surrounding federal spending and fiscal sustainability.

US Debt Could Reach $50 Trillion Within Six Years

The long-term outlook remains a concern for economic researchers. According to the Peterson Institute for International Economics, US national debt could reach $50 trillion within six years if the government does not introduce reforms to spending or taxation.

The projection points to the potential consequences of continuing current fiscal policies without significant changes. Adjustments to government expenditure or taxation could play an important role in determining the future path of federal borrowing.

With the national debt already approaching $40.4 trillion, future borrowing levels and rising interest costs remain important issues for policymakers and the wider economy.

The Times of Russia will continue to cover developments in the US economy, including federal borrowing, government finances and the country’s evolving fiscal outlook.
