Ukraine has launched another major drone attack targeting Moscow, striking a key oil refinery for the second time this week as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks stronger international support to bring an end to the ongoing war. The attack comes amid intensified fighting between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides continuing large-scale military operations.
According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, air defence systems intercepted 555 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight, including nearly 200 drones approaching Moscow. Despite the extensive defensive measures, several drones reportedly reached a major Moscow oil refinery, causing significant damage and triggering fires.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that the refinery was among the targets hit during the attack. Authorities also reported minor damage to a shopping centre and several residential and industrial facilities in the surrounding Moscow region. Emergency services were deployed to contain fires and assess the damage.
The targeted refinery plays a critical role in supplying fuel and petroleum products to Moscow’s population. In a separate operation, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck a railway bridge over the North Crimean Canal, a move that could disrupt Russian military logistics in occupied Crimea. Ukrainian military officials stated that the operation was aimed at weakening supply routes used by Russian forces.
Meanwhile, Russia carried out another wave of attacks on Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian authorities reported that Kyiv came under ballistic missile attack, prompting air raid alerts across the capital. Officials urged residents to remain in shelters while air defence systems responded to incoming threats.
Additional attacks were reported in Sumy and Dnipro, where casualties and injuries were recorded. Ukrainian officials said air defence units successfully intercepted many of the drones and missiles launched during the overnight assault, although several locations sustained damage.
The renewed escalation comes as President Zelenskyy continues diplomatic efforts with international partners, including the United States and European allies. Speaking after discussions with global leaders, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for stronger air defence capabilities and increased pressure on Russia to negotiate an end to the conflict.
G7 leaders have pledged continued support for Ukraine, including enhanced air defence assistance and additional economic measures targeting Russia’s energy sector. The United Kingdom has also announced a substantial military aid package that includes the delivery of thousands of drones to Ukraine before the end of the year.
US President Donald Trump stated that he would do what he could to help bring the conflict to a conclusion, while Zelenskyy stressed that international commitments must be fully implemented to ensure lasting security and stability.
As military operations continue on both sides, diplomatic efforts remain focused on finding a path toward peace. However, the latest attacks highlight the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the challenges facing negotiators seeking a resolution to the war.
