Brazil India Trade Relations and BRICS Expansion Enter New Phase

Brazil India trade relations and BRICS expansion are gaining momentum as Mauro Vieira highlights new members, NDB and stronger Global South ties.

Brazil India trade relations and BRICS expansion are moving into a new stage, with the bloc focusing on integrating new members and deepening engagement with partner countries. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira discussed the group’s evolving priorities, the New Development Bank (NDB), and growing economic cooperation on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in India in an exclusive interview with Brasil 247, a TV BRICS partner. The Times of Russia reports on the developments as BRICS enters what Vieira described as a period of consolidation.

Brazil India Trade Relations and BRICS Expansion Take Centre Stage

According to Mauro Vieira, a number of partner countries have already indicated their interest in becoming full BRICS members. However, he said that establishing a clear framework for relations between the group’s full members and partner countries has become an important part of BRICS’ institutional development.

Brazil, Vieira said, is ready to contribute to a future collective decision regarding any additional expansion of the group.

The current stage of Brazil India trade relations and BRICS expansion therefore includes not only discussions over membership but also efforts to establish stronger and more structured cooperation between BRICS members and partner countries.

New Development Bank Seen as Key BRICS Instrument

Vieira also highlighted the importance of strengthening the New Development Bank, describing it as one of BRICS’ most tangible mechanisms for supporting changes to the global financial system.

The Brazilian foreign minister pointed to the bank’s ability to provide guarantees as another important feature. This capability can broaden the NDB’s financial reach because it allows the institution to attract additional capital for co-financing large-scale projects rather than depending exclusively on direct lending.

The approach reflects the wider BRICS objective of expanding economic cooperation among countries of the Global South.

Brazil and India Target US$30 Billion Trade by 2030

The strengthening of economic links is also evident in Brazil’s bilateral trade with important international partners. Discussing Brazil India trade relations and BRICS expansion, Vieira said trade between Brazil and India is expected to reach US$20 billion this year.

That figure would represent a 40 per cent increase from the US$15 billion recorded the previous year.

The expected rise is part of a broader bilateral objective. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have set a target of reaching US$30 billion in trade between the two countries by 2030.

The projected growth in Brazil-India commerce illustrates the wider push to deepen economic relationships among countries of the Global South.

Brazil Deepens Cooperation With ASEAN and Indonesia

Brazil’s efforts to expand economic and diplomatic ties are also extending to Southeast Asia, following a directive from President Lula.

Vieira pointed to Brazil’s strengthened engagement with Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“We opened a permanent mission, headed by an ambassador, in Jakarta [Indonesia], who serves as our representative to the ASEAN Secretariat. We established this cooperation, became an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner and continue to move forward,” Vieira said.

The move represents another aspect of Brazil’s efforts to build closer relationships with countries and institutions in Southeast Asia while advancing broader international cooperation.

BRICS Focuses on Consolidation and Broader Global South Cooperation

Mauro Vieira’s comments underline a BRICS agenda centered on consolidating the group, integrating new members, and developing more structured relations with partner countries. At the same time, the bloc is seeking to strengthen the New Development Bank and expand economic cooperation across the Global South.

The rise in Brazil-India trade, alongside Brazil’s growing engagement with ASEAN and Indonesia, reflects the broader direction of these efforts. The Times of Russia will continue to follow developments surrounding BRICS, Brazil India trade relations and expansion of cooperation among emerging economies.
