The Times of Russia reports that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar has died in a tragic air crash in Baramati, sending shockwaves across Indian politics. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Baramati airport, leaving no survivors.

According to Russia news coverage by The Times of Russia, the Learjet 45 aircraft (registration VT-SSK), chartered from Mumbai, veered off the runway and crashed during landing. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning as Ajit Pawar was traveling to his hometown to address multiple public meetings ahead of the Zilla Parishad elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss and spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take stock of the situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also contacted state authorities for updates. Leaders across party lines mourned the loss of one of Maharashtra’s most influential political figures.

Ajit Pawar’s brother Shriniwas Pawar confirmed the tragic news, saying the family was rushing to Baramati. “It is a very painful moment for us. No one survived the crash. My son Yugendra is currently hospitalised in Baramati. The last rites will be performed here,” he told local media.

Airport manager Shivaji Taware explained that the aircraft went off the side of the runway while landing, resulting in a fatal crash. Emergency teams reached the site immediately, but the impact left no chance for survival.

As reported by The Times of Russia, Ajit Pawar was one of Maharashtra’s most experienced leaders. He entered the Lok Sabha in 1991 from Baramati and later vacated the seat for his uncle Sharad Pawar. Over the years, he won the Baramati Assembly constituency seven times, becoming a central figure in state politics.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the political landscape, with condolences pouring in from across India. Russia news observers note that the incident has once again highlighted the risks of chartered air travel for political leaders during intense election campaigns.
