Antonio Guterres Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Highlights Humanitarian Crisis

United Nations, October 2024 – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a strong plea for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, calling attention to the dire humanitarian situation facing Palestinian civilians in North Gaza. He expressed deep concern over the “unbearable” plight of civilians trapped in the region, where continued Israeli military operations have brought about widespread devastation, depriving many of basic necessities.

“The plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in North Gaza is unbearable,” Guterres said, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian supplies, including food, medicine, and shelter. However, he pointed out that repeated efforts to deliver these essential resources have largely been denied by Israeli authorities, with only a few exceptions. “Countless lives are in peril,” he warned.

According to Guterres, the ongoing military operations have rendered living conditions “untenable” for the population in North Gaza, with deprivation escalating amidst continuous conflict. He condemned what he described as “little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law,” underscoring the urgency of protecting civilian lives and respecting international law.

“In the name of humanity, I reiterate my call for an immediate ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and accountability for crimes under international law,” he stated, urging the global community to prioritize human rights and justice.

The Secretary-General’s appeal comes amid mounting international concern for civilians affected by the conflict. His call for accountability under international law underscores the UN’s position that actions in conflict zones must adhere to humanitarian standards, even as political and military disputes persist.
