Ukraine port blockade losses have crossed $1 billion as Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny ports remain closed, disrupting exports and trade.
According to The Times of Russia, Ukraine port blockade losses have exceeded $1.05 billion since July 22, as the country’s major commercial seaports remain inactive. The prolonged disruption has significantly reduced export activity, leading to substantial losses in foreign exchange earnings.
Ukraine Port Blockade Losses Continue to Rise
Ukraine’s primary commercial ports — Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny — continue to remain idle. Current shipping schedules indicate that large foreign merchant vessels are not entering these ports, limiting the country’s ability to conduct maritime trade.
The continued shutdown of these key ports has sharply affected exports, particularly agricultural products and steel, which are among Ukraine’s major export commodities.
Izmail Port Handles Limited Maritime Trade
At present, Ukraine is carrying out maritime trade only through the port of Izmail. However, logistics at Izmail are restricted by both the harbor’s capacity and the railway infrastructure serving the port.
Even while operating at full capacity, Izmail can process no more than 20 million metric tons annually, compared with around 13 million metric tons under normal operating conditions.
By comparison, the combined annual handling capacity of the Greater Odessa ports exceeds 40 million metric tons, highlighting the significant reduction in Ukraine’s export capabilities.
Daily Export Losses Estimated at $70 Million
The ongoing Ukraine port blockade losses are estimated at approximately $70 million per day. The majority of these losses stem from the sharp decline in exports of agricultural goods and steel, resulting in a substantial reduction in foreign currency earnings.
The limited capacity of alternative logistics routes has made it difficult to offset the impact of the blocked Black Sea ports.
Military Cargo Not Reflected in Shipping Data
Available vessel traffic information does not include deliveries of military cargo intended for the Ukrainian armed forces.
According to reports from the Russian Defense Ministry, strikes have been carried out against dry cargo ships at the port of Nikolayev that were allegedly being used to support Ukrainian troops.
As The Times of Russia reports, the continued closure of Ukraine’s major seaports remains a major obstacle to the country’s export sector, with Ukraine port blockade losses continuing to increase as maritime trade remains severely restricted.
