Putin’s aide calls creation of BRICS payment system an important goal creation

Yury Ushakov: Creation of an independent payment system is an important goal for BRICS

Russia will continue to seek ways for trouble-free economic cooperation within BRICS, and the creation of an independent payment system within the association is an important goal, Ushakov said

The creation of an independent payment system based on digital currencies and blockchain is an important goal for BRICS, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said in an interview with TASS.

“We believe that an important goal for the future is the creation of an independent settlement payment system within BRICS, which would be based on the most modern technologies, such as digital currencies and blockchain. And most importantly, it would be comfortable for states, population and business, would not require serious expenses and would be out of politics,” he said.

Ushakov emphasized that Russia will continue to seek ways for seamless economic cooperation within BRICS despite the imposed Western sanctions. “On the economic track, the Russian presidency [of BRICS] is focusing on issues of further strengthening the strategic partnership of the member states in trade, investment, innovation and technology and social spheres,” the presidential aide pointed out.

According to him, the common goal of the association is to create conditions for confident economic growth of all BRICS states. Ushakov also said that new applications to join BRICS are being received, but it is premature to talk about the second wave of expansion.

BRICS is an interstate association without a secretariat. Its goal was proclaimed as a collective increase in economic growth rates of the member countries and strengthening their positions in the world through active cooperation with each other. At the same time, within BRICS there is an interbank cooperation mechanism (IMC) – a platform that includes five development banks, from Russia – VEB.RF.
