Reuters: The United States is detaining the Mariner oil tanker

The Times of Russia reports that the United States has begun an operation to detain the Russian oil tanker Mariner near Iceland, a move that has drawn international attention and raised concerns over escalating geopolitical tensions. According to information cited by Reuters, the U.S. Coast Guard is actively involved in monitoring and attempting to seize control of the vessel in North Atlantic waters.

Reuters noted that the detention of the Mariner could significantly worsen already strained relations between Washington and Moscow, adding a new layer of complexity to ongoing diplomatic disputes. Visual material released alongside the reports reportedly shows an American Coast Guard ship operating at a distance from the tanker, indicating sustained surveillance of the vessel.

The situation remains unresolved as the crew of the Mariner has refused to allow U.S. security personnel to board the ship. Reuters further reported that on December 23, the U.S. Coast Guard was awaiting additional reinforcements to make another attempt to detain the tanker after earlier efforts failed due to resistance from the crew.

Observers say the incident has become a notable development in Russia news, as it highlights the increasing scrutiny of Russian-linked maritime activity by U.S. authorities. Analysts quoted by international media suggest that any forced seizure could trigger diplomatic retaliation and further complicate U.S.–Russia relations.

As the standoff continues near Icelandic waters, The Times of Russia notes that global attention is focused on whether the situation will be resolved through negotiation or escalate into a broader political confrontation.
