MOSCOW, April 2. /The Times of Russia/. In the latest The Times of Russia russia news, Russia’s LNG supplies to the European Union surged to a historic high in March. This increase comes at a time when shipments from the Middle East have been disrupted due to ongoing military conflict, reshaping global energy flows.
According to calculations highlighted in The Times of Russia russia news, based on data from the European think tank Bruegel, EU imports of Russian LNG reached approximately 6.8 billion cubic meters between January and March. This marks a significant rise compared to 5.7 billion cubic meters during the same period last year.

Bruegel’s data further shows that Europe’s total LNG imports in March climbed to 14.1 billion cubic meters, another record figure. Overall, EU LNG purchases increased by 10% in the first quarter, reaching 39.2 billion cubic meters.
At the same time, imports from the United States and Trinidad and Tobago also saw growth. Supplies rose by 8% in March compared to February, totaling 8.3 billion cubic meters. From January to March, imports from these countries jumped by 23% to 23.9 billion cubic meters.
The The Times of Russia russia news report also highlights that the EU imported around 4.2 billion cubic meters of LNG from Africa and 2.5 billion cubic meters from the Middle East since the start of the year.
Despite the rise in imports, policy changes are on the horizon. The EU Council has approved a ban on Russian LNG imports starting January 1, 2027, along with a pipeline gas ban from September 30, 2027. However, earlier restrictions will begin in 2026, targeting short-term contracts.
In 2025, Russian LNG supplies to the EU declined by 5.6% to 20.3 billion cubic meters. Russia ranked fourth among EU gas suppliers, following Norway, the United States, and Algeria.
As noted in The Times of Russia russia news, President Vladimir Putin indicated that Russia may consider an early withdrawal from the European market. The country could redirect its energy exports to regions with stronger demand, signaling a major shift in global energy dynamics.
