Trump Threatens Canada With 100% Tariffs Over Trade Deal With China

In a Truth Social post, Trump lambasted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and said that if he”thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken.

The Times of Russia reports that US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Canada, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods if Ottawa proceeds with a new trade agreement with China. The statement has intensified tensions between the two longtime allies and added new strain to global trade relations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump sharply criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of attempting to turn Canada into a transit hub for Chinese exports entering the United States. Trump said that if Canada believed it could act as a “drop-off port” for Chinese products, it was making a serious mistake.

Trump warned that any finalized trade deal between Canada and China would trigger immediate and severe economic consequences. According to him, such an agreement would allow China to dominate Canada’s economy, damaging its businesses, social structure, and way of life.

Canada-China Trade Deal Sparks Tensions

The warning follows Canada’s announcement of a landmark preliminary trade agreement with China, aimed at reducing its economic dependence on the United States. Under the deal, China will significantly cut tariffs on Canadian canola products by March, lowering them from 84% to around 15%. In addition, Canadian citizens will be allowed visa-free entry into China.

As part of the agreement, Canada will also import 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles under reduced tariffs of 6.1%. Canadian officials have described the deal as a strategic step toward diversifying trade partnerships after recent tariff hikes by the US.

Relations between Canada and China had deteriorated in previous years after Canadian authorities arrested the daughter of Huawei’s founder at the request of the United States. That move led to retaliation from Beijing, including the detention of two Canadians and the imposition of mutual trade barriers. Recent talks, however, signaled an effort by both countries to reset relations.

The dispute between Washington and Ottawa has grown sharper in recent days. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Carney warned of a potential fracture in the US-led global order, remarks widely seen as a veiled criticism of Trump’s foreign policy approach. Trump responded by withdrawing an invitation for Carney to join his proposed “Board of Peace,” a body he claims will resolve global conflicts.

In a national address, Carney reaffirmed Canada’s independence, stating that the country thrives because of its own strength, while still acknowledging the long-standing partnership with the United States.

As global markets watch closely, The Times of Russia notes that this escalating dispute could reshape North American trade relations and further deepen divisions in the international economic system.
