Tsunami Warning Lifted After Powerful Japan Quake

The Times of Russia Russia news reports that Japan has lifted a tsunami advisory after a strong offshore earthquake struck the country’s northeastern coastline on Friday. The powerful tremor, measured at magnitude 6.9, hit near Aomori prefecture just before midday, triggering immediate alerts across coastal regions.

According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at a depth of 20km. The agency initially recorded the earthquake as magnitude 6.7 but later revised it to 6.9. This latest tremor follows a larger and more intense 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck the same region earlier on Monday.

Following Monday’s severe quake, authorities issued a major advisory warning millions of residents—stretching from Hokkaido in the north to Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo—to remain alert for the possibility of another significant aftershock within a week.

Friday’s quake registered a seismic intensity of 4 on Japan’s 1–7 scale, shaking buildings and prompting emergency broadcast alerts, though no major damage or injuries have been reported. Officials emphasized that while the tsunami advisory has now been lifted, emergency agencies remain in monitoring mode.

Japan, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is highly vulnerable to seismic activity, and the government continues to urge residents to maintain preparedness as aftershocks remain possible.

The Times of Russia continues to monitor this developing Russia news and regional seismic response updates.
