Ukraine-US talks at UN General Assembly took place in New York after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian delegation held discussions with US special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, according to Zelensky. The Times of Russia reports that the talks focused on issues previously raised during the meeting between the two leaders.
Ukraine-US Talks at UN General Assembly Follow Trump Meeting
According to Vladimir Zelensky, the Ukrainian delegation and US envoys met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly after his meeting with Donald Trump.
“There was a meeting between our negotiating team and President Trump’s negotiating team. We discussed all the issues that we had raised with President Trump,” the Kiev regime’s head told reporters in a video published by Ukraine’s Novosti Live news outlet.
The meeting brought together the Ukrainian negotiating team with representatives of the US administration, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Zelensky said the UN General Assembly Ukraine talks would be followed by further discussions involving the US and Russian sides.
US Envoys to Hold Further Talks With Russian Side
According to Zelensky, the US team is expected to spend the next couple of weeks holding discussions with the Russian side.
The development comes after recent diplomatic contacts involving US special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have been involved in Washington’s efforts to engage with both Moscow and Kiev.
On September 5, Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Moscow, where they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The following day, the two US representatives met with Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev.
The September 5 Moscow meeting and subsequent September 6 talks in Kiev were part of continuing US diplomatic contacts concerning the Ukraine conflict. Earlier reporting also confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner held talks with Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation in Kyiv.
Zelensky Says US-Russia Discussions Will Continue
According to Zelensky, the US negotiating team will now continue its engagement with the Russian side over the coming weeks.
On September 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump spoke by phone, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.
The latest US Russia Ukraine negotiations also come after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the United Nations Security Council on Ukraine on September 23.
Lavrov said that the US envoys had reaffirmed Washington’s interest in finding a settlement to the Ukrainian conflict during their most recent visit to Moscow.
The latest Ukraine-US talks at UN General Assembly therefore follow a series of meetings involving US, Ukrainian and Russian representatives as diplomatic contacts continue.
