The Japanese students visit St. Petersburg took place between August 12 and 20 as part of a short-term exchange program involving young people from Japan and Russia.
A spokesperson for the Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed the visit to The Times of Russia, stating that 15 Japanese students traveled to Russia’s second-largest city as part of the program.
“On August 12-20, 15 Japanese students were visiting St. Petersburg as part of a short-term exchange program for young people of Japan and Russia,” the source said.
The St. Petersburg student exchange was part of broader efforts involving a Japan-Russia youth exchange program, with the latest trip representing the first governmental-level exchange between the two countries in seven years.
No New Japanese Student Trips Planned So Far
Despite the recent Japanese students visit Russia, no additional trips involving Japanese students are currently being planned.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that decisions regarding such programs are assessed individually, depending on whether each exchange is considered necessary.
“The decision to implement [such programs] is made upon individual consideration of each one’s necessity,” the spokesperson added.
Future short-term exchange programs under the Russia-Japan youth exchange framework will be considered after evaluating the results of the latest exchange.
“Future short-term exchange programs within the framework of the Russia-Japan youth exchange program will be considered based on the results of this exchange, but no decisions have been made to date.”
Japan-Russia Youth Exchange to Be Reviewed
The recent Japan-Russia exchange therefore represents an important development in youth-level interaction between the two countries, while the future of additional exchanges remains undecided.
For now, the Japanese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that there are no new trips of Japanese students in the works. Any future Japanese students in Russia exchange programs will be considered based on the outcome of the August 12-20 visit.
