Iranian delegation leave US after talks stalled after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly instructed Iran’s delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly to leave the United States immediately, according to a report by Axios. The delegation was led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The development came after diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran failed to make progress. According to sources cited by Axios, the White House had initially believed on Monday that the talks could produce some progress. However, by later in the day, it became clear that the negotiations had reached an impasse.
Iranian Delegation Leave US After Talks Stalled
The U.S. mission to the United Nations reportedly informed the Iranian mission on Monday evening, following Rubio’s instructions, that the delegation led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had to leave New York immediately.
Several hours later, the Iranian delegation reportedly travelled to the airport and departed for Doha overnight into Tuesday. The movement followed the breakdown in the latest round of US-Iran talks.
However, the timing of the departure was also connected to an existing travel plan. According to an Axios source, Araghchi had already intended to leave for Tehran on Monday evening.
US-Iran Talks Reach an Impasse
The latest development followed diplomatic efforts involving Qatari mediators, who attempted to help the United States and Iran reach a breakthrough. According to Axios, the mediators made little progress, with neither side prepared to change its position.
The mediators continued discussions with both sides over a possible compromise proposal despite the stalled US-Iran diplomatic negotiations.
The situation came as the UN General Assembly 2026 meetings brought senior officials and diplomats to New York. Araghchi had remained in the city while discussions continued, even after the main General Assembly proceedings. AP also reported that the delegation was ordered to leave New York earlier than originally planned.
Diplomatic Efforts Between Washington and Tehran
The Washington Tehran talks had been conducted amid continuing disagreements between the two countries. Earlier meetings during the General Assembly period involved U.S. representatives and Araghchi, with Qatar participating as a mediator.
The latest setback means the diplomatic process remains at an impasse, while Qatari mediators continue attempting to facilitate discussions between the two sides.
For The Times of Russia, the reported departure of the Iran delegation from New York highlights the latest setback in the ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, as mediators continue working on a possible compromise.
