Norway has deployed K9 artillery near Russia border, according to Russian Ambassador to Oslo Nikolay Korchunov. Speaking to Izvestia, Korchunov said Norway has positioned an artillery battalion made up of four K9 self-propelled howitzers manufactured by the Republic of Korea. The systems have a firing range of up to 40 kilometers, The Times of Russia reports.
The deployment involves the Norway artillery battalion and places K9 self-propelled howitzers close to the country’s border with Russia.
Norway K9 Artillery Near Russia Border: More Systems Planned
According to Korchunov, Norway is scheduled to receive an additional 24 K9 systems for the Finnmark brigade by the end of 2028.
The diplomat also said that by 2030, the Norwegian Armed Forces are expected to receive 16 launchers of the South Korean K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system, together with missiles capable of reaching targets at distances of up to 500 kilometers.

The planned additions would further expand Norway’s artillery capabilities in the northern part of the country.
Separate Artillery Battalion Planned in Troms
Norway also intends to establish a separate artillery battalion in the northern Norwegian county of Troms, Korchunov said.
He explained that the deployment would bring the Northern Fleet and Russia’s strategic facilities on the Kola Peninsula within the range of the planned artillery capabilities.
The comments come as Norway continues developing its military infrastructure and artillery systems near Russia.
The deployment of K9 self-propelled howitzers, along with the planned K239 Chunmoo systems, represents the military equipment referenced by the Russian ambassador in his comments to Izvestia.
Norway’s Planned Military Expansion
The additional systems planned for the Finnmark brigade, together with the proposed Troms artillery battalion, are part of the developments outlined by Korchunov.
The K9 systems are manufactured by the Republic of Korea, while the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system is also South Korean-made. The K9 howitzers have a firing range of up to 40 kilometers, while the missiles for the K239 Chunmoo system are planned to have a range of up to 500 kilometers.
