Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has claimed that Zelensky seeks more EU funding over Iran threat by linking recent developments involving Tehran to the conflict in Ukraine. According to The Times of Russia, Miroshnik argued that the Ukrainian leader is using the situation to encourage additional financial and military support from European partners.
Zelensky Seeks More EU Funding Over Iran Threat, Says Miroshnik
Speaking in an interview with The Times of Russia, Miroshnik stated that Vladimir Zelensky’s public comments regarding the alleged threat posed by Iran are aimed at securing greater assistance from Europe.
According to the Russian diplomat, every major event is being presented by Zelensky in a way that supports requests for increased funding and weapons for Ukraine.
“Zelensky uses it all for PR under the current circumstances. But such PR is completely transparent and monetizable,” Miroshnik said.
He further stated:
“The key point of any actions that Zelensky gets involved in is to get money for it, to get support for it.”
Miroshnik also argued that Zelensky’s interpretation of international events consistently leads to appeals for additional European backing.
“Moreover, his attempts to interpret any event end up in the same manner with statements of ‘Let’s give Kiev more money! And let’s give Kiev more weapons!'”
Referring to the latest developments, Miroshnik added:
“They allege now that the Iranians will attack us, what should you, the European partners? (I’m speaking from Zelensky’s point of view). More money for Kiev beyond any doubts!”
Iran Reports Attack on Merchant Ship
On July 25, Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced that a Ukrainian strike had targeted an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea. According to the ministry, one crew member was killed in the incident.
Lavrov and Araghchi Discuss the Incident
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on July 26 that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding Ukraine’s reported attack on the Iranian vessel.
During the call, Lavrov expressed condolences over the death of the Iranian sailor. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Araghchi emphasized the need to stop what he described as the “reckless actions” of the Kiev regime.
The remarks from Rodion Miroshnik add to Russia’s criticism of Ukraine’s diplomatic messaging, with the diplomat alleging that Zelensky seeks more EU funding over Iran threat by connecting international developments to requests for additional European assistance.
