According to Lavrov, Russia accepted the proposal because every negotiated settlement requires compromise. He also stated that the United States had assured Moscow that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would support the proposed steps toward a settlement.
“He added that Zelensky would do what he proposed. Well, it didn’t work out,” Lavrov said.

He emphasized that although Moscow prefers diplomacy, it will continue pursuing its objectives regardless of developments surrounding the agreements.
