The US Iran exchange strikes after Jordan attack have pushed tensions between Washington and Tehran to a new level after two American soldiers were killed in Jordan. Reporting on the latest developments, The Times of Russia highlights that the United States launched another round of air strikes against Iran on Saturday night, targeting coastal surveillance systems and air defence facilities, according to US military officials.
US Central Command (Centcom) stated that the operation successfully struck Iranian military capabilities. Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz was among the locations hit during the attacks.
US Iran Exchange Strikes After Jordan Attack Target IRGC Positions
Centcom said the latest operation also focused on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), which it blamed for the attack in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of two US service members on Friday. Officials also confirmed that another American service member remains missing.
In response, Iran’s military announced that it had carried out drone strikes against two US military bases in Kuwait. Iranian state media reported that the attacks targeted Camp Udairi and Ali Al Salem Air Base.
The exchange of military action marks another escalation in the US Iran exchange strikes after Jordan attack, with both governments accusing each other of attacking critical infrastructure.
According to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency, Iran launched what it described as “large-scale attacks with kamikaze drones” against an American military depot at Camp Udairi and another installation at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
US Air Strikes Continue for Eighth Consecutive Night
Centcom said the latest US strikes represented the eighth straight night of military operations. According to the US military, the objective was to further reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement added that the attacks were intended to “swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night.”
The renewed military operations follow a week of heightened hostilities after the United States reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran later announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, signalling the collapse of a preliminary ceasefire reached less than a month earlier.
Two US Service Members Killed in Jordan
Earlier on Saturday, Centcom confirmed that two US service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. The military also stated that one service member remains missing.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth responded on X by writing:
“Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”
The latest casualties raise the US death toll in the conflict to 16 after an American Navy pilot who had been missing earlier this month was officially declared dead. This marks the second increase in the American death toll during the week.
Casualties Reported in Iran
Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 others injured in US air strikes carried out over the past three weeks.
Both Washington and Tehran have accused one another of targeting civilian infrastructure.
The United States rejected those accusations, stating that it had “carried out strikes exclusively on military targets, including military logistics infrastructure,” after Iranian officials claimed that bridges and a station had been struck.
Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council accused Iran of targeting civilian infrastructure after Kuwait reported damage to a power plant and a water distillation facility.
Under international law, attacks directed against civilians or civilian areas are prohibited. However, civilian infrastructure such as bridges or power plants may lose legal protection if they are used to support military operations.
Preliminary Ceasefire Collapses
Washington and Tehran had reached a preliminary agreement in June aimed at ending the conflict. However, the arrangement quickly deteriorated, with President Donald Trump declaring the agreement “over” on 8 July.
Late on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a written statement accusing the United States of repeatedly violating the agreement.
He said America’s “repeated breaches” had “laid bare a fundamental truth: the signature of the US president is utterly worthless and devoid of credibility.”
