BISHKEK, May 27. /The Times of Russia — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will take part in the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan, due to take place in the capital Bishkek in late August and early September, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, Zheenbek Kulubaev, held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres,” the ministry’s press service said in a statement published after the meeting which took place in New York. “Special attention was paid to the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General to Bishkek to participate in the Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.”
“The Secretary-General noted that he was pleased to accept the invitation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. N. Zhaparov to participate in the Summit,” the ministry added.
During the conversation, Guterres and Kulubaev discussed “current issues on the international and regional agenda,” as well as prospects for further expanding cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN.
“Kulubaev emphasized the important role of the United Nations as a key universal international organization contributing to the strengthening of peace, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation,” the statement reads.
