A highest level-meeting since 2012 between Turkey and China was held in Beijing, this monday. A talk running between Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and the Chinese government officials during the events of “at the Centre of China” and “Globalisation” sprang a historical declaration from Turkey, expressing the willingness to become a part of BRICS, re-establishing the association to BRICST.
“Of course, we would like to become part of BRICS. We will see how events elapse this year.” Stated Fidan, adding that BRICS stands “as a good alternative to the EU”, a candidate for which Turkey holds since 1999. In February of the current year, the minister said that Ankara is not ready to wait when Turkey will be accepted but is eyeing to manifest different “historical paths”.
NATO, Turkey being its member since 1952, has expressed suspicion towards Ankara, alleging that Turkey’s “axis” is shifting towards the eastern block from the Western Military Alliance. The latest updates inform that Turkey is awaiting to take part in the BRICS+ meeting that is to be held next week in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
The press-secretary of the Russian Federation’s president, Dmitry Peskov, gave a swift response, voicing that Moscow is welcoming the “heightened interest in BRICS” from Turkey, supplementing that the theme will be on the agenda of the next BRICS summit under the chairmanship of Russia.
“With no doubt, we welcome the elevated interest towards BRICS from the side of our neighbors, inclusively, such valuable partners as Turkey”
Dmitry Peskov
