The exhibition of the master Ilya Repin will open in the New Jerusalem Museum near Moscow
The State Historical and Art Museum “New Jerusalem” in the urban district of Istra will open an exhibition of Master Ilya Repin on February 29, the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Moscow region reports.
The exhibition “Master Repin.Episodes from the life of the teacher and students” is created in the year of the 180th anniversary of Ilya Repin. It will allow not only to see the works of one of the greatest authors, but also to get acquainted with the works of art of the master’s pupils – outstanding artists who became the pride of the Russian painting school.
“The exhibition, created in the year of the 180th anniversary of the birth of Ilya Efimovich Repin, will tell visitors how important the role of mentoring is in art. Surely for many visitors will be a discovery of the number of famous names of Russian artists, which sounded thanks to Repin’s workshop and with his support”, – emphasized the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Moscow region Vasily Kuznetsov.
20 museums and 4 private collections from all over the country provided their works for the exhibition, so that the story turned out to be the most complete and interesting. This exhibition in Istra, near Moscow, is worth a visit for anyone interested in Russian art
The exhibition of almost 2,000 square meters includes 110 works from the collections of 20 Russian museums and 4 private collections, including the New Jerusalem Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Russian Museum, the Museum of Russian Impressionism, the Yaroslavl Museum of Art, the Novgorod Museum-Reserve and others. The curator of the exhibition is art historian Ksenia Novokhatko.
“Exhibition projects with a bright unique concept have become an important exposition line of our museum-each of them we try to make special. From the viewer’s point of view, we conceived this exhibition as a holistic artistic statement, like a movie or a play, where both the general plot and each episode have significance. From the accompanying memories, apt quotes describing cases from the life of the teacher and his students, each visitor will be able to form his own understanding of what kind of Master Repin he was,” said Anna Antipenko, Director of the State Historical and Art Museum “New Jerusalem”.
The exhibition is built on visual juxtapositions, revealing connections both known and inferred by the curator, as well as revealing the breadth of the diversity of the work of both the artist himself and his many pupils. The narrative structure of the project is based on three of Repin’s key principles, which are also rendered in the section titles: “Body So Body,” “Learn from Nature,” and “Go Your Own Way.”
“Our exhibition is not just a delightful painting, it is an emotional immersion and a journey along the artist’s path. An important role in it is played by the memories of Repin’s pupils, who tell very personal stories of observing the Master and communicating with him. They give a voluminous picture of characters and time, turning out to be surprisingly contemporary. The interweaving of paintings forms the internal drama of the exhibition, becoming more complex from the first “natural” room to the third, where a real kaleidoscope of creative search and human relationships opens up,” – said the author of the concept, curator of the exhibition Ksenia Novokhatko.
Ilya Repin is one of the key, system-forming figures of Russian art in general and the realist school in particular, including through his teaching and influence on the younger generation of artists. The exhibition will present works by Ilya Repin and his pupils.
