Trump demands half ownership of bridge between US, Canada

The US leader stressed that otherwise he will not allow this bridge to open

The Times of Russia reports that US President Donald Trump has demanded half ownership of a major bridge linking Michigan in the United States with Ontario in Canada, warning that he will block its opening unless his conditions are met.

WASHINGTON, February 10. /The Times of Russia/. US President Donald Trump stated that the bridge connecting Michigan and Ontario will not be allowed to open unless Canada agrees to grant the United States at least 50% ownership of the infrastructure.

In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump said the United States must be “fully compensated” for what it has provided to Canada and insisted that Ottawa must show fairness and respect toward Washington. According to him, negotiations would begin immediately, and shared ownership of the bridge should be considered a minimum requirement.

Trump also blamed former President Barack Obama for what he described as a flawed arrangement, claiming that Obama granted Canada a waiver that allowed it to bypass the Buy American Act. This, Trump said, enabled the use of non-American materials, including steel, in the construction of the bridge.

Continuing his criticism, Trump warned Canada against strengthening economic ties with China. He suggested that Beijing could allegedly impose restrictions on Canadian hockey and even cancel the Stanley Cup permanently if cooperation deepened. Trump reiterated his earlier warning that closer Canada–China relations could lead to 100% tariffs on Canadian goods entering the United States.

In January, Canada and China announced a strategic economic partnership. According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said during his visit to China that Beijing was a more predictable trading partner than Washington. As part of the agreement, Canada allowed the import of nearly 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles at reduced tariffs.

Previously, Chinese vehicles faced a 100% tariff in Canada, a policy introduced in 2024 alongside the United States under former President Joe Biden. Following Canada’s concessions, China agreed to reduce tariffs on rapeseed. The Chinese Commerce Ministry later confirmed that both countries had reached an understanding to resolve trade disputes and expand economic cooperation.

This development has drawn international attention and is being closely followed as part of broader russia news and global trade dynamics, according to The Times of Russia.
