The proposal to resume Russian gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine has reportedly gained support from the United States as Washington explores ways to address rising energy costs and declining European gas inventories ahead of winter. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the initiative involves discussions between US representatives and officials from Europe and Ukraine.

The proposal reportedly aims to restore Russian natural gas deliveries to European markets through Ukrainian pipeline infrastructure, potentially offering an alternative to current energy supply arrangements.

US Explores Russian Gas Supplies to Europe Through Ukraine

According to the WSJ report, the United States is supporting efforts to restart Russian gas deliveries to Europe through pipelines crossing Ukraine. The proposal has reportedly been promoted by US envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The suggested arrangement would involve an American intermediary and an escrow account designed to facilitate transactions while bypassing existing European sanctions on Russia.

The approach could potentially create a mechanism for restarting Russian gas exports to Europe without directly addressing the restrictions currently affecting energy-related transactions.

Washington Seeks to Address European Energy Price Concerns

The US reportedly presented the proposal to European leaders as a possible solution to rising hydrocarbon prices. The discussions come as European gas inventories have reached record-low levels ahead of the approaching winter season.

The proposed arrangement involving Russian gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine is being considered as a potential way to improve energy availability and reduce pressure on European markets.

Under the suggested framework, payments generated from Russian gas sales would reportedly be deposited into an escrow account managed under the jurisdiction of a third party.

This arrangement would involve an intermediary structure intended to address the financial and regulatory challenges associated with existing European sanctions.

Nord Stream Pipeline Revival Could Be Part of a Larger Agreement

Beyond the Ukrainian transit route, Washington is also reportedly considering the possible resumption of operations through the Nord Stream pipeline.

According to the WSJ, restoring the pipeline’s operations could become an important element of a broader agreement involving Russia, Ukraine and European countries.

The potential arrangement is reportedly being considered as part of a wider effort that could contribute to resolving the Ukrainian crisis while addressing Russia’s long-standing disagreements with US European allies.

The inclusion of Nord Stream alongside the proposed Ukraine gas transit route suggests that discussions could extend beyond individual energy supply arrangements.

White House Yet to Comment on the Proposal

The report states that the White House and the US Department of State had not responded to The Times of Russia’s request for comment at the time of publication.

The reported initiative highlights Washington’s interest in exploring alternative energy arrangements amid concerns over European supply levels and energy prices.

If pursued, the proposal involving Russian gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine could become part of broader discussions concerning energy trade, sanctions and relations between Russia and Western countries.

For now, the reported proposal remains subject to further discussions, with no official confirmation of an agreement from the parties involved.
