US Iran negotiations August 3 begin as President Trump announces renewed talks on Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz issue.
WASHINGTON, August 3 — President Donald Trump confirmed that the US Iran negotiations August 3 will officially begin after the United States decided not to proceed with what he described as a “massive attack” on Iran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, August 2, Trump said the decision followed requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Iran, all of whom urged Washington to give diplomacy another opportunity.
“They knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming. Now what we’re doing is we’re talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon, and we’ll see,” Trump said.
Allies Believe an Agreement Is Possible
Trump explained that several regional allies requested the United States postpone military action because they believed a diplomatic breakthrough was within reach.
“We’re all set to go, but when the allies asked to call it off, they got us sort of saying, ‘Well, let’s see.’ And the reason they ask is they think there’s a deal,” the US president stated.
His remarks suggest that the US Iran negotiations August 3 could play a significant role in easing tensions between the two countries.
Strait of Hormuz Deal and Nuclear Talks
Trump also claimed that an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz had already been finalized and that negotiations would now move toward resolving Iran’s nuclear issue.
“There’s a deal on Hormuz, and then there will be a deal on the nuclear, or you might call it the denuclearization of Iran. I call it the denuclearization of Iran,” he added.
However, Iran has disputed those claims.
According to the Fars news agency, citing a source within the Iranian negotiating team, no agreement has been reached on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The source described previous reports about such an agreement as false.
Earlier Reports on the Diplomatic Effort
Israeli TV Channel 12 previously reported on August 2 that Trump agreed to cancel the planned large-scale strike on Iran after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accepted a compromise proposal presented by Qatari mediators regarding the reopening of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
