The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that it completed a “heavy wave” of strikes targeting dozens of facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The operation was launched after Iran fired ballistic missiles at US bases in Jordan and targeted ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
Centcom stated that the strikes focused on military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, as well as maritime capabilities. According to the US military, all Iranian missiles aimed at American forces were successfully intercepted.
Civilian Casualties Reported in Southern Iran
Iranian state media reported that the strikes caused casualties in several areas across southern and western Iran.
The Fars News Agency, quoting Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, said a residential home in the Chah Tangu neighborhood on Qeshm Island was struck. The attack reportedly killed three members of one family, including a father, a mother, and their two-year-old child.
Iranian media also reported that Qeshm Island and Abadan, both important to the country’s oil industry, were among the locations hit during the operation.
Conflict Continues Despite Earlier Hopes for Diplomacy
The US heavy strikes on Iran after attack on American troops came after several days of relative calm, during which both countries had temporarily paused military operations.
President Donald Trump previously described the ongoing contacts as “very friendly negotiations,” suggesting that diplomatic efforts were underway. However, Tehran denied that any discussions were taking place.
Following Iran’s missile attack on a US base in Jordan on Tuesday, Trump announced that the United States would respond.
“We’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming. They asked us not to do it,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Centcom Details One-Hour Military Operation
The latest American military operation began at 20:00 ET on Wednesday (01:00 BST Thursday) and lasted for approximately one hour.
Centcom described the strikes as a “powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on US forces based in the Middle East.”
According to the military statement, the operation specifically targeted command infrastructure, missile systems, drone facilities, coastal defense positions, and maritime assets connected to Iran’s military operations.
Jordan Intercepts Iranian Missiles
Jordan’s armed forces announced that their air defense systems successfully intercepted five Iranian missiles that were heading toward Jordanian territory on Thursday.
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a US air base and a command center in Jordan in response to what it described as aggression by the American military.
The IRGC also claimed that its naval forces struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after the vessels allegedly ignored warnings and continued through what Iran described as an unsafe and illegal maritime route.
Previous Military Operations Raised Regional Tensions
Last Friday, President Trump suspended an intensive US bombing campaign that had continued for 13 consecutive nights. During that operation, the United States said it targeted Iranian military infrastructure and weapons facilities. Reports indicated that scores of people were killed.
Earlier this week, Centcom also confirmed that joint US-Saudi military strikes targeted multiple logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq. The operation was described as a response to more than 30 IRGC-directed drone attacks carried out over the previous 72 hours.
Iraq Condemns Strikes on Popular Mobilisation Forces
Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), largely made up of Iran-backed Shia militias, said that at least 20 of its members were killed during the US-Saudi strikes on its bases.
The Iraqi presidency condemned the attacks, calling them “an unacceptable attack and a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.”
However, President Trump told Fox News that the military operation had been coordinated with the Iraqi government.
Saudi Arabia Seeks to Reduce Escalation
According to Axios, citing an unnamed US official, President Trump recently met Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, who reportedly conveyed Saudi Arabia’s desire to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran. The White House has not commented on the report.
Saudi Arabia, regarded as the leading Sunni Muslim power, and Iran, the largest Shia Muslim nation, have remained regional rivals for decades.
