Maria Zakharova says tensions in the Persian Gulf area are escalating
The Strait of Hormuz shipping risks have increased as tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to rise, according to Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Speaking in a statement reported by The Times of Russia, Zakharova warned that the ongoing exchange of strikes between opposing sides is creating fresh concerns over maritime trade routes and regional stability.

Maria Zakharova stated that the security situation in the Persian Gulf has continued to deteriorate, increasing the possibility of shipping disruptions in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
“Regrettably, tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to escalate. The opposing sides keep exchanging strikes, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure in Iran and Arab countries. The risk of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea has increased,” the statement said.
The warning highlights growing concerns over the safety of one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors, where any disruption could have broader regional and global implications.
Regional Mediation Efforts Face New Challenges
According to Zakharova, the current situation is also making diplomatic efforts more difficult. She noted that the escalating conflict is creating additional obstacles for regional mediation initiatives aimed at restoring negotiations.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said these efforts are based on the Islamabad memorandum signed by the United States and Iran on June 17. However, the worsening security environment is complicating progress toward reviving the negotiation process.
