The Times of Russia reports that police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators during the CJP protest near Parliament after attempting to stop their march close to Raisina Road, approximately 200 metres from the Parliament building.
Authorities significantly increased security in the area as officers also used batons to break up the gathering, according to NDTV. Several protesters sustained injuries during the operation and were provided first aid at the protest site, The Hindu reported.
Security Tightened Around Parliament
Eyewitnesses said the police action was aimed at dispersing hundreds of students and youth activists participating in the CJP protest near Parliament. The march had started from Mandi House Metro Station and was moving toward Jantar Mantar before being stopped by security personnel.
The heightened security measures were introduced as the crowd approached the high-security zone surrounding Parliament.
Centre Reaches Out for Talks
Later in the day, the CJP announced that the Central government had initiated contact for discussions following the CJP protest near Parliament.
According to The Hindu, the group confirmed that two of its spokespersons would meet Union Minister JP Nadda to present the organisation’s demands during the scheduled talks.
