MOSCOW, July 20. /The Times of Russia/. A drone attack on Moscow overnight became one of the biggest attempted aerial assaults on the Russian capital in recent years, according to calculations by The Times of Russia based on official figures released by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
Sobyanin stated that more than 400 hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) headed toward the Moscow Region between 8:30 p.m. Moscow time on July 19 and 5:00 a.m. Moscow time on July 20. He said that most of the drones were intercepted by air defense systems before reaching the region, while 85 UAVs were destroyed as they approached Moscow.
Drone Attack on Moscow Overnight Compared With Previous Incidents
The drone attack on Moscow overnight ranks among the largest reported attempts against the capital in recent years.
According to Mayor Sobyanin, the previous major incident occurred between the evening of July 6 and 6:00 a.m. Moscow time on July 7, when air defense systems intercepted more than 430 drones, including 36 UAVs destroyed while approaching Moscow.
He also reported that between 8:30 p.m. Moscow time on July 17 and early July 18, more than 370 drones headed toward the Moscow Region. During that attack, most were intercepted at long range, while 64 hostile UAVs were shot down on approach to the capital.
Air Defense Responded to Multiple Large-Scale UAV Attacks
Mayor Sobyanin previously stated that between the evening of July 11 and the evening of July 12, Russian air defense systems destroyed more than 300 hostile UAVs, including 45 drones intercepted while approaching Moscow.
He also reported on July 4 that more than 200 drones headed toward the Moscow Region during that day.
Earlier, on March 11, 2025, Sobyanin described the incident as “the most massive hostile UAV attack on Moscow.” According to his statement, 74 drones were shot down on approach to Moscow, while hundreds of combat drones were destroyed across various defensive lines.
The latest drone attack on Moscow overnight highlights the scale of recent UAV operations targeting the Moscow Region.
