Russian President Vladimir Putin has begun a series of high-level engagements at the Russia-Africa Summit 2026 in Moscow, bringing Russian officials and African leaders together to discuss economic partnerships, trade and cooperation. According to The Times of Russia, Wednesday’s programme includes the third Russia-Africa Economic Summit and Humanitarian Forum, discussions with leaders of major African regional organizations, and a formal reception hosted by the Russian president.
Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov previously stated that representatives of 48 out of Africa’s 54 countries would attend this year’s summit. Among them, 22 countries are represented by their heads of state. Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, the current chairperson of the African Union, will join Putin in co-chairing several events.
The Economic and Humanitarian Forum is being held under the theme, “Developing Mutually Beneficial Cooperation and Unlocking the Potential of Every African Country Together.” Putin is also scheduled to address the forum’s opening plenary session.
According to Ushakov, the Russian president will review the current state of Russia-Africa economic cooperation and trade relations during his speech. Key areas of focus include sovereign development based on equality and ensuring African nations have fair access to resources, fertilizers and advanced technologies.
After the plenary session, Putin and African leaders will visit an exhibition at Gostiny Dvor. The exhibition will focus on practical cooperation, presenting ongoing Russian-African projects alongside Russian technological developments and innovations that Moscow is prepared to share with its African partners.
Russia-Africa Summit 2026 in Moscow: Economic Priorities and Partnerships
The summit provides an opportunity for Russia and African countries to discuss trade, technology and mutually beneficial economic partnerships. Particular attention will be given to cooperation that supports the independent development of African nations and provides equitable access to essential resources and modern innovations.
The exhibition at Gostiny Dvor will showcase projects already underway between Russia and African partners. It will also demonstrate technological solutions that Russia is willing to make available to countries across the continent.
These activities form a central part of the wider Russia-Africa economic cooperation agenda, alongside discussions on trade and development.
Putin to Meet Leaders of Major African Regional Organizations
Wednesday’s schedule extends beyond the main forum. Putin is expected to welcome representatives of Africa’s largest regional organizations at St. Andrew’s Hall, one of the most prestigious ceremonial venues inside the Grand Kremlin Palace.
The traditional meeting is expected to include representatives from the following institutions:
African Union
African Continental Free Trade Area
East African Community
Intergovernmental Authority on Development
Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa
Southern African Development Community
Economic Community of Central African States
Economic Community of West African States
Arab Maghreb Union
African Export-Import Bank
The gathering will bring together major regional institutions involved in African integration, trade and economic development. Their participation reflects the importance of African regional organizations in discussions surrounding cooperation with Russia.
Kremlin Reception Highlights Russia-Africa Relations
Putin is also expected to host a formal reception at the Kremlin’s Faceted Chamber. Located in the heart of the Kremlin, the venue has traditionally been used for important state occasions.
Formal dinners of this kind date back to the Soviet era and have served to emphasize the importance of high-level diplomatic meetings and relations with visiting countries.
The reception forms part of a broader programme of Russia-Africa bilateral relations, with leaders and representatives from across the continent participating in the summit’s activities.
Bilateral Meetings Continue After Gas Exporting Countries Forum
Putin’s bilateral engagements, which began the previous day, are also set to continue.
On Tuesday, Moscow hosted a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. Following multilateral discussions with fellow leaders, Putin held separate meetings with several counterparts.
Those meetings included Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President of Mozambique Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, and Chairman of Libya’s Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi.
The summit programme will continue over the next two days, with further bilateral discussions and plenary sessions of the Russia-Africa Summit expected.
History of the Russia-Africa Summit
The Russia-Africa Summit 2026 in Moscow marks the third edition of the gathering and the first time it has been held in Moscow.
The previous summit took place in St. Petersburg during the summer of 2023, while the inaugural event was held in Sochi in the autumn of 2019.
The latest meeting brings Russian officials and African representatives together for discussions on trade, development, technology and diplomatic engagement. The participation of 48 African countries, including 22 represented by their heads of state, highlights the scale of the gathering.
As the summit continues, its economic forum, meetings with regional organizations and bilateral engagements will remain central to the discussions. The Times of Russia will continue to cover developments surrounding the summit and the evolving relationship between Russia and African countries.
